Linda Larisch

LINDA LARISCH — Since 1989, when she moved to Florida’s cultural coast, Linda Larisch has taken part in over sixty solo and group exhibitions. Currently her work is on exhibit in galleries in Washington DC, Tubac, Arizona and Sarasota, Florida. Her art has been exhibited in Bradenton, Longboat Key, Venice, Sanibel, Captiva, Orlando, Tallahassee, Tampa, Punta Gorda, Florida and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Born in Calcutta, India Linda Larisch is the fourth generation of Viennese artists on her father’s side. Her great grandfather was a sculptor. Her grandfather painted miniatures on ivory and her father a well known acrylic artist. Surrounded by art, creating became second nature to her. Although she never had extensive formal art training much of what she learned is assimilated and self taught.

Raised and educated on Long Island and New York City, Linda Larisch received a BA in Art History from New York University. Traveling extensively in Europe she did have the opportunity to study with Oscar Kokoschka in Salzburg, Austria, and was assistant scenic designer to the American acting company at the Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy. She also spent many winters traveling through Mexico and Central America. Northern Vermont was her home for 23 years. There she illustrated and hand lettered an organic gardening book “The Ten Week Garden” and “An Activity Handbook for Children.” She eventually started her own quilt business traveling the New England craft show circuit. Many of her art quilts were shown in galleries throughout the New England area. On moving to Florida the quilt imagery was transferred to canvas with acrylic paint bringing her full circle. “The paintings of Linda Larisch are very inner directed; they spring from an internal vision that the artist superimposes on her figures and landscapes in a lush, surrealistic style.

”Of her abstractions Joan Altabe says regarding a recent Father and Daughter exhibit, “If Larisch’s art is the story of modern man, a companion exhibit of works by Linda Larisch is the climax. Her work, abstract and looking like a cosmic meltdown, comes across as the future world of the one her father created. Both artists show meticulous brushwork. But while Larisch the elder creates a hard surface that makes the vision coldly real, Larisch the younger shows surfaces that bend and fuse, like lava in a volcanic eruption. Scary tales, both, and well told.”

Residing in Nokomis, Florida for the past 19 years, Linda Larisch has been teaching art to children, painting whenever possible and working for the Venice Art Center.
