KATE MCCAVITT — Kate McCavitt, lives "Between Two Worlds", with one foot having now left all things “Corporate”, and the other covered in blue paint, stepping on to canvas and leaving behind a map to find her.
Kate McCavitt was born and raised in Newburgh, NY, and attended schools in New York and Pittsburgh, PA. She is a self-taught artist! She's also been a yoga and meditation teacher, a corporate trainer and motivational speaker, managed new cars sales of VW's, and holds certifications in Jin Shin Jyutsu and Cisco Networking Associate and Networking Design. Right and left brain kinda gal. Until she bailed from the corporate world in 2005, she owned a project management company in San Diego and for 14 years, installed enterprise voice and data networks.
Kate McCavitt lives in Oceanside, California and is involved there with the Oceanside Museum of Art, teaching classes at the Museum's School of Art and mentoring elementary kids in art through OMA's outreach program. Her studio is in her home and her her home is her primary gallery for showing her work. She finds joy in the Artist's Way, in writing and creating art journals, in having her grandchildren around, in beach walks and diving trips to warm water destinations, in teaching and in fully following her passion, inspiring others. She tries to live by the words of Martha Graham, "You have to keep open and aware directly to the urges that motivate you."
Having studied Asian philosophy since the 1960's and Asian brush painting since 1988, her early traditional work stands alone. Kate now wraps these 18 years of art practice into "Art Stories" and abstractions created with many layers of Golden fluid acrylics. In between the transparent layers are metals, foils, sand, photo transfers, paper, fabric, prints of parts of her body and other things that assert themselves. She works flat, on many pieces at a time which keeps her out of her head about forcing a direction too early. Using bold, pure color, strong contrast, and heavy textural elements, she hopes viewers will want to touch and then disappear into the work's magic.
