Fast Facts about Michael and Inessa Garmash This husband and wife team collaborates to create figues in quiet, thoughful moments. Most of the subjects are shown outdoors, making the paintings not just portraits, but landscapes with figures in them. Michael Garmash has said that the paintings are telling a story, and the story must involve both the landscapes and the figures. The scenes with mother and child are similar to the tender moments depicted by the Impressionist Mary Cassatt. The viewer is not a part of these scenes, but instead, has just come across them by chance. The viewer happends to catch a glimpse of the narrative, but is not invited in. The subject is unaware of the viewer. The two began painting together after their toddler, Polina, added to one of Michael's portrait paintings that he was submitting for a school project. Inessa fixed the painting. He was praised for doing his best work so far. They have collaborated ever since.
