Rita Shapiro

RITA SHAPIRO — Growing up in Brooklyn, New York, in the 30’s and 40’s was not an ideal childhood for artist Rita Shapiro. Her parents were not at all supportive of her artistic endeavors, but she was allowed to study painting and sculpture at Washington Irving High School. She then went on to receive a Bachelor of Science and Master of Education degree from Temple University, and continued her study of art at Pratt Institute.

Unfortunately for the world of art, life led Rita Shapiro away from her first love and she had to put on many hats before finally donning the artist’s beret. For some years she was a teacher, a retail shop owner, and a real estate developer. But art called relentlessly so she finally reinitiated her art studies at The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Several of the academy’s teachers were instrumental in making Rita aware of her abilities, and one in particular, encouraged her to go get a studio and just paint! She took his advice and never looked back. It wasn’t long before she was submitting work to juried shows and winning numerous awards and prizes.
