SHRAY: Pastels

“I have always done my pastels after I have created the sculpture — I don’t use them as a guide; that's because, as I'm working, I have no idea where the sculpture is coming from.

When you look at my pastels, you will see that they are very cubistic, as if my mind is finding their underlying three-dimensional form. I see through them - I see the front and back at the same time. I draw the pastel in the same way that I sculpt. I always see them as a three-dimensional cube.

I don’t have to draw my pastels with the piece in front of me … they are already so much a part of me. There is a moment when I do the pastels where the freedom is very intense. Creating my pastels is a way of saying “good-bye” to the piece – of letting go.” — Shray
